Tuesday 1 July

We caught a suburban train across town, then got on a bus which took us for 1.5 hours through the countryside to ..
Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia.

We changed our left over Czech crowns into Slovak crowns, and caught a trolley bus into town. We booked up for a foot tour of the old city for 2pm, and went for our own little tram trip into the suburbs. After lunch, we met our guide and 2 USA ladies, and learned something about the history of this city.

We caught a bus up the hill behind the castle, and walked back to the riverside.

When we had booked our return trip to Vienna by high-speed ferry, the only trip left was at 10.30pm. So we waited at the jetty for the 6:30pm boat to fill, and luckily there were 2 spare seats, so we grabbed them, and had a most enjoyable ride up the Danube in the late afternoon sunshine.

We had pizza by the river, then went to view the illuminated town hall. Unfortunately, the roads around it are still impassable because of the open-air screens etc from the football, so we walked for miles, it seemed, to get around the area and back to the train.

Monday 30 June

We criss-crossed the city booking trains and buses for our forth-coming international excursions, then started on a self-guided walk around Mozart sites in the city centre.

This took most of the day, with time out for lunch, and an organ concert in one of the most lavishly decorated churches we have seen - St Peter's.

We also had a quick walk past the Hofburg Palace, previous home of Emperors and Empresses, and current home of the Vienna Boys Choir.

So we missed having our nanna-naps, and after tea went back into town for our Mozart concert in the Musikverien's Goldische Saal (golden hall), where Mozart actually performed in his time. All performers at our concert were in period costume, their playing was excellent, and their choices in the second half were very well received - Magic Flute, Blue Danube Waltz, Radzetski March.

So another busy day.
