Wednesday 6 August York to Hadrian

After leaving York,we travelled through some very nice countryside, through the Howardian Hills, and on to Helmsley. We had stayed here before, but no-one told us about Rievaulx Abbey, and I wanted to go there. It is the English equivalent to the Welsh Tintern Abbey.

We did our guided tour with headsets, and then were off again through more pretty Yorkshire Moors country towards Newcastle.

Last time we had also missed the big modern sculpture 'The Angel of the North', so this time I had checked its location on the internet last night. So we drove round and around in circles, getting madder an madder at each other. We stopped for lunch, asked a few locals, and finally found it.

We then ended up driving almost through the centre of Newcastle,

before heading west along Hadrians' Wall. Here again we got lost, drove around and around, and finally found the youth hostel.

We quit while we were ahead, accepted their cafe dinner, and are now sitting in the car in the carpark of the adjoining tourist information office, borrowing their internet. It is raining, Blogger is not behaving, it is getting dark, so we are now going inside.
